Hôtel Dieu and Dreem: Clinical trials

Today we’re excited to share the results of the latest clinical trial made with Hôtel Dieu and Dreem.

These clinical trial results were obtained using the beta version of the Dreem headband. The beta version of Dreem was launched in March 2016. The new version of the headband was announced for pre-order earlier this year, in June. It is based on the same technology and seeks to improve the quality of deep sleep. This study focuses on the classification of sleep phases (realized via EEG measurement) and deep sleep stimulations (through sound frequency between 500 and 1.000 Hertz, typically called “pink noise”).

Frontiersin published the official results of these clinical trials made by Dreem and Hôtel-Dieu. The goal of this article is to give you a quick sum up of these results.

Dreem & Hôtel Dieu: Clinical trial

It was divided into two parts, with 20 subjects:

– The 1st part of the study demonstrated the results of the Dreem headband when compared to data collected via polysomnography. This randomized study was realized double-blind with crossed protocols for 60 nights.

– The 2nd part, an observational pilot study realized at home on 90 subjects evaluated the functioning of the headband Dreem. Some cases were excluded from the analysis of this study: people who slept less than 3 hours, people with deep sleep higher than 3 hours and people with recordings lower than 5 hours.

Results

The results demonstrate that the Dreem headband has similar acquisition quality than the polysomnography. In real time (specificity 0. 90, sensitivity 0. 70), the Dreem headband is also able to synchronize the acoustic stimulations accurately during the deep sleep phase. Furthermore, the study shows that the repeated hearing of stimulations (10 nights) still produces the same effect on subjects. It means that the subjects’ brain does not get used to the repeated hearing stimulations.

This clinical trial confirms Dreem’s promise to identify and measure the various sleep phases with precision and improve the quality of deep sleep by the process of sound stimulation.
