We’re pretty sure your first question about Dreem is, well, “How does it help me sleep better and how does it help to improve the quality of my deep sleep?”
Where does Dreem come from?
First, it’s important to understand our foundation. Dreem is derived from the same EEG (electroencephalogram) technology used in sleep labs around the world. This means the headband is able to record your brain activity. By doing so, it determines your sleep stages accurately and in real time. From there, our product Dreem triggers sound at precise moments. It helps you to fall asleep faster, get deeper sleep, and wake up refreshed.
How does that actually work? Think about your inner ear as one big generator. It takes in synchronized sounds and transforms them into electrical impulses. These impulses are interpreted by your brain to enhance the quality of your sleep. Dreem is based on proven scientific research that making a precise sound, at a precise moment, can sync with your brainwaves to stimulate deep sleep.
How do these simulations work?
Think of your brain as an organic orchestra. When you fall asleep, the rhythms of its music slow down. In deep sleep, the tempo reaches their lowest point, at approximately 1 Hertz. It means that your orchestra is playing for half a second, quiet for the next half a second, and on and on. Dreem’s sensors are able to record these “slow waves.”
Throughout the night, the amplitude of your brain activity progressively weakens, meaning you are more restless rather than restful. Worse, when you’re stressed (and when you get older) your brain orchestra gets lazy — further dampening your EEG amplitude, and resulting in poor sleep quality. This might not sound terrible, but deep sleep deprivation has been directly linked to reductions in cognitive and behavioral performance, depression, memory loss, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.
Dreem as a sleep conductor for your brain’s orchestra
The Dreem headband is sort of a sleep conductor for your brain’s orchestra: keeping deep sleep in tempo, and sustained through the night. It uses a metronome ringing at accurate times to remind them when to play. This synchronicity means your slow waves stay in the right rhythm and volume throughout the night, ultimately resulting in positive effects on your sleep [anchor articles Benefits].

The curve on the left shows the average deep sleep. The curve on the right side shows the slow waves enforced by Dreem’s stimulation. By amplifying your slow waves at the right moment, Dreem both extends and amplifies your deep sleep.
Results: has deep sleep been improved?
In March of 2016, we revealed the first version of Dreem to an exclusive group of selected customers. They have participated since then to our product improvement. The data we collected from them reveal an indisputable impact of the audio stimulation on the brain signal (+17% in the 4 seconds following the stimulation compared to the 4 seconds preceding it). We also confirm a clear increase in slow oscillation density (+34%), one major feature of deep sleep that has been linked to declarative memory enhancement.
